Plein air is the practice of painting outdoors, from the French term meaning “in open air”. I prefer to call it Adventure Painting, because there is almost always an interesting quest you must embark on to bring these pieces to life.

After many years of hiking I decided I wanted to document some of my experiences in a more immersive way than simply taking photos. I bought a cheap watercolor set and started playing around with simple scenes, which eventually evolved into a slow and meditative practice. Creating outdoors, while rife with its own set of challenges, helps me ground into the moment and observe the natural world—and myself—with intimate reverence.
